Router Table: Professional Guide to Safe Woodworking
In most woodworking shops and for anyone starting to approach our world, the Router Table is the beating heart of the workshop. Power tools such as hand router machines or trim routers offer unmatched freedom of movement, while the Router Table is a stationary machine capable of delivering millimeter precision and types of machining that are simply not possible freehand.
Klein router bits are designed for industries, professional craftsmen, artisans, and anyone who wants to start woodworking. We have been producing woodworking tools for over 30 years and we know how important of a high quality tool is: without an excellent cutting tool, even the best machine becomes useless. Let’s explore together how to approach the Router Table correctly.
Why the Router Table is Essential in a Woodworking Shop
- The Router Table allows faster and more precise woodworking operations, even on smaller wood pieces or panels.
- It allows you to create grooves, rabbets, complex edge profiles, templates, and much more with extreme precision.
- You can use router bits with larger shanks, impossible to use with a trim router.
- Discover our router bits with 6mm to 8mm shank
Safety and control go hand in hand when working with this machine. Using a stationary machine instead of a handheld one provides more control and therefore greater safety. But how?
First of all, you must fully understand the machine you are using. We strongly recommend reading the instruction manual provided by the Router Table manufacturer. If you are not completely sure you can work safely, you must be able to stop before making mistakes.
Getting Started: Preparing and Setting Up the Router Table
Before starting, the setup phase is essential. Let’s take a look at some basic settings and essential knowledge.
- Flat work surface and proper tool tightening. The work surface must be perfectly flat and free from irregularities. The router bit must be tightened up to the point marked with the “K” engraved on the shank to ensure a secure grip.
- Klein quality. Do not save money on tools. Choosing a trusted and certified manufacturer allows you to work safely and achieve excellent results.
- Setting the height. Accurately adjust the router bit height on the table and make sure the rail-guide slides perfectly. Remember: it is always better to make multiple passes and remove smaller amounts of material rather than overloading and damaging the router bit or yourself.
- RPM settings. According to European regulations, the maximum RPM (revolutions per minute) must be indicated directly on the tool. This is important because it tells us the maximum safe operating speed. What is the ideal RPM?
It depends — and that is the most accurate answer. As a general rule, we recommend operating between 10% and 15% below the indicated maximum RPM. DISCOVER OUR 12mm SHANK ROUTER BITS AND MUCH MORE!
There are many factors that affect the ideal RPM and cutting performance
Machine wear, router bit condition, environmental humidity, material condition, number of cutting edges, feed rate speed (manual in this case), material hardness — these are only some of the many parameters to consider. This is why it is impossible to have one exact formula that always guarantees a perfect result.
Safety and Workpiece Control are the Priority
As explained by Raffaele - Il Califfo in the video, workpiece control is essential for safety. We also remind you that the Router Table is not designed to remove large amounts of material in a single pass. Multiple lighter passes is always the better option!
The rule of conventional feed direction
The wood piece or panel must always move against the rotation direction of the router bit. Feeding the workpiece “with the rotation” can cause the router bit to violently pull the material, putting the operator’s hands in danger.
For this reason, it is always recommended to use push blocks, push sticks, or sliding jigs.
Router Table usage summary
- Read the Router Table manufacturer’s manual
- Set up the table and router bit – speed, tool tightening, push blocks
- Check the work area and make sure you have full control of the workpiece
- Route carefully until you find the correct setup and cutting combination
